Next Communications: The foundation of a communications condo

I totally agree - which is why we need to meet in the kitchen more. Can anyone say potluck! Seriously, I think this is a good illustration. I think school PR people probably come by this easier than some other industries because most of us are the marketing, ad, and PR people.

Excellent post, although I would suggest that some of the functions of the kitchen, especially planning, spill over into the living room and media room. Only through sustainable conversations can we develop the kind of plan necessary for success in a truly integrated communications program. We also plan what media we'll watch, or show our guests.

I like the idea of a Great Room, with the kitchen area kind of in the middle, and the living room and media room on either side, with no obstructed views between the three. In a real Great Room, people mix and mingle and move effortlessly between the three areas, seeking nourishment in the kitchen, exchanging ideas in the living room, or soaking up the wonder of what's on the screen in the media room. The movement of communications ideas can mirror the movement of people at a well-cast party.

@ Kristen - Thank you for bringing up a great point about school PR. We do have many hats to wear depending on the district's need at any given time.

@ Samra - You brought up exactly the thought I was hoping to illicit with this post. I love your Great Room analogy along with the idea of a well-cast party. an integrated communications program is what we as professionals should work to achieve for our organizations. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    Richie:

Great analogy here. My mind is racing with other metaphors for this discussion.

How about a foyer where we welcome anyone into our space? We have our alerts set and know when anyone enters that arena and run to greet them. Or a library where we hold intimate discussions with those that want to converse more about specific topics and issues? (Can you say Twitter chats?) Or the Dining Room where we have great conversations and people can come and go? Or the private inner chamber where we woo and romance customers, clients, influencers and enthusiasts who then go out and become our evangelists? Or the garage that is open for all to see where things get messy, grimy as we tinker on new projects and contraptions?

Thanks for sharing and getting my mind thinking in new directions!
